Project 2: Pannexin 1 and Sympathetic Vasoconstriction

Obesity (termed metabolic disease) is becoming an epidemic in the Unites States (CDC, 2012) with dire
consequences on hypertension. We have found that one protein in particular, pannexin 1, can in large part
mimic the effects of metabolic syndrome on blood vessels. This grant will elucidate how this protein is
selectively activated with hopes of providing a better understanding of the pathology of metabolic syndrome on
blood vessels.
